The lithic materials from San Matías Gulf coast (Argentina). Comparative analysis of the lithic artifacts from surface, buried deposits and shell middens from the Río Negro province coast

In this paper we present the results of the comparative analyses carried out on the lithic materials coming from shell middens, buried and surface contexts from San Matías Gulf, on the Río Negro province coast (Argentine Patagonia). For the comparison, we have used variables such as cortex percentage, the fragmentation degree of the assemblages, the raw materials that appear and the quality of the rocks. The metric attributes of the pieces were also compared. The results indicate that there are significant differences depending on the contexts of recovery (shell middens or surface). This trend would be related to the formation processes of the sites, but also it would be linked to differential discard behaviors within the same spaces.
