Methodological Proposal for the Analysis of Skeletal Remains with Injuries Resulted from Torture

Abstract

Aiming to demonstrate the contribution of Forensic Anthropology in the investigation of crimes against humanity and to propose a methodological approach for the analysis of cases of torture in contexts of political violence, this paper presents the results of the analysis of perimortem injuries found in the skeletons of seven victims of the violent uprising in East Timor in 1999.The sample showed injuries produced by blunt force trauma, as well as gunshot wounds and penetrating wounds; the study illustrates how such injuries constitute evidences in cases of torture; additionally to informing about the cause of death of the victims as well as the circumstances of the incident.As conclusion, the analysis highlight the importance of the injuries in the bones as well as the significance of material evidences found during the exhumation of the remains and the witness testimonies.
