This Article aims to analyze the crimes of enslavement and forced labour as international crimes, which are far from disappearing. To this end, a historical analysis of the ideas that have influenced the abolitionist movement in the nineteen century, the first rules prohibiting such practices, and their treatment in the international human rights law. Subsequently an analysis of the developments in international criminal justice for the repression of these acts as crimes against humanity in Nuremberg, the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, the hibrid criminal tribunals and the International Criminal Court.

Francisco Jara Bustos
Abogado. Licenciado en Ciencias Jurídicas y Sociales por la Universidad de Chile. Se desempeña como Editor del Anuario de Derechos Humanos (2015) en el Centro de Derechos Humanos, de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Chile. Es también ayudante ad honorem de las cátedras de Derecho Civil y Derecho Procesal Civil y Penal en la misma Universidad. Las ideas preliminares de este trabajo fueron expuestas en la ponencia titulada: “La esclavitud y los trabajos forzados como crímenes internacionales. De Auschwitz a Isla Dawson” presentada en el Tercer Congreso Estudiantil de Derecho del Trabajo celebrado en la Universidad de Valparaíso el 26 de septiembre de 2013.
