Augmented domesticities. Towards a non-typological architecture

Authors

Abstract

This article studies the phenomenon of ‘augmented domesticity’ as a contextual prism that encompasses two symmetrical realities: domestic urbanism and urban domesticity. Starting from a critical analysis of the consequences of the global COVID-19 crisis, the growing processes of urbanization of the domestic and domestication of the urban are identified. A review of the concept of typology is proposed in order to trace its update, based on the loss of dependency between form and function. The methodology used analyzes two specific spaces in the domestic sphere, the living room and the kitchen, exemplifying the crucial role that new technologies have played in the diffusion of the boundaries between the domestic and the urban. This aims to test the emergence of a possible ‘non-typological architecture’ that would offer a model less dependent exclusively on formal composition, which may be complemented with the tool of the ‘mise en scène’.
