Eugenio Pereira Salas, the late noted historian, makes a survey of the work of French architects, sculptors, painters and lithographers in Chile, from the middle of the 19th Century onwards. His article establishes the influence they exerted upon the growth of the arts in our country, as well as their gravitation in the development of the national culture, which the author sees as the result of the interaction of the spiritual forces of both countries.

Eugenio Pereira, Universidad de Chile
Fallecido en 1979, es el mayor investigador de la historia de la
cultura chilena. Fue presidente de la Academia Chilena de la Historia,
Decano de la Facultad de Filosofía y Educación de la Universidad
de Chile, entre otras múltiples responsabilidades que desempeñó; sobresaliendo
como incansable profesor que supo formar distinguidos discípulos.
Entre sus muchos libros cabe mencionar Orígenes del arte musical en Chile e Historia del arte en el reino de Chile.
