Abstract

This paper is a contribution to the regulation theory from a geographical perspective. It presents and characterizes the expansion of capitalism in the region of Coquimbo (Chile) through the analysis of spatial dynamics in the Elqui Valley. The use of qualitative methods allows to overcome the limits of legal formalism and detect the strategies of local actors. The regulation of capitalism in the Elqui Valley includes various economic sectors (mining, agriculture, tourism and urban growth) each of them having its specific rhythms and patterns of accumulation. The appropriation of nature by those activities provides insights on the mechanisms of spatial expansion. Strategies of resistance devised to face this expansion shape the margins of capitalism.
