Abstract

Since it opened in 1986 La Casa de la Mujer in Valparaíso (The House of the Woman), was actively involved in projects and policy initiatives developed to recognize women as social subject. One of these projects involved was the campaigning for the reinstatement of the right to therapeutic abortion, which was legal in Chile until 1989. In the context of the transition from dictatorship to democracy between 1988 and 1995, the activists from La Casa de la Mujer in Valparaiso worked to improve the futures of women in the region. From documents written by members of La Casa de la Mujer in Valparaiso, their experiences and visibility through recorded dialogues and performances will be analyzed. This evidence will be used to support the current political debate in Chile and the relationship between the right to decide and it political.
