El otoño del patriarca (1975) is a novel about dictatorship and also much more, as evidenced through existing critical bibliography of the book. This article, centered on the image of the Mother of the Dictator and on the relationships that are established between the two, intends to show that the constant textual presence of Bendición Alvarado’s character has other significant implications. In this article, such implications are linked to cultural stereotypes distinctive to this continent, and are connected to the configuration of certain signs of identity combined with certain peculiarities in the development of the History of the Spanish-American peoples.
